Separate EntranceMust have a private, direct entrance accessible from outside the main house. Note: For detached or semi-detached houses, front wall entrances are not permitted.
Ceiling HeightMinimum of 6 feet 5 inches (1.95 meters) throughout the basement, including under beams and ducts.
Egress WindowsEach bedroom must have at least one egress window with a minimum opening size of 0.35 square meters (3.77 square feet) and no dimension less than 15 inches.
Fire SafetyInstallation of interconnected smoke alarms in each bedroom and common area, carbon monoxide detectors on each floor serving a bedroom, and fire separations as per the Ontario Building Code.
Ventilation & LightingAdequate natural and artificial lighting, along with proper ventilation systems, to ensure good air quality and prevent moisture buildup.
Electrical ComplianceElectrical installations must be approved and inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), with a certificate or ESA sticker on the main switchboard.
Plumbing RequirementsMust include hot and cold water supply, toilet, shower or bathtub, bathroom sink, kitchen sink, and separate water shut-off valves for each unit.
